12.07.2009 - Elvis Dumervil and Friends Bring Holiday Cheer to Kids from Open Door Youth Gang Alternatives

DENVER - The Denver Sports stars came out in support of the Rev. Leon Kelly’s Open Door Youth Gang Alternatives Dec. 7, but it was the smiles on the children’s faces that shone brightest on this night.

More than 50 children from Kelly’s after-school program were treated to a night of Holiday shopping at a Denver-area Walmart store to buy gifts for members of their family, hosted by Denver Broncos linebacker Elvis Dumervil. Dumervil, who leads the NFL with 15 quarterback sacks, has developed a relationship with the program over the last 18 months and has spoken to the kids about avoiding the pitfalls that can derail their dreams.

Dumervil brought teammates Champ Bailey, David Bruton, Andra Davis and Darrell Reid, while former teammate Rod Smith and Colorado Rockies second baseman Clint Barmes also joined the merriment in support of the program and the kids.

“For these kids,” said Kelly, “it’s one thing to see these guys on TV running all over the field, but for them to be able to put their pads down and come out and read to a kid or just ‘kick it’ with a kid, it's invaluable. The things they have done behind the scenes, that's how you know it's really true from the heart." Continued...
