That sentiment was true for each athlete who participated, and it was clear they were having as much fun as the kids.

“Growing up, in my family, we really didn’t celebrate Christmas like this,” said Dumervil. “So for me this is fun to see these kids have such a good time shopping for gifts for their family members. I live through them with this. Being able to give them the chance to give to others is a good feeling.”

Dumervil’s desire to support the Open Door program is based not only on the tremendous need, but on Kelly’s long-standing commitment to the kids.

"It's coming from his heart," Dumervil said of Kelly. "He treats the kids as if they're his kids, and I sense that and I definitely like to be part of something like that."

Each child was encouraged to write his or her holiday wish list for family members, and given a budget of $110. The children were chosen from the nearly 200 regular participants in the Open Door program for their high achievement and dedication to the program and its principles.

As carts raced from aisle to aisle, young minds also raced with the joyful stress of having to make tough choices on their gift ideas. Continued...
