“You have to take kids to a place they’ve never been,” Smith said. “Then you want them to get used to it. Because then what happens—and it happened to me when I was their age—somebody took me under their wing and showed me things I couldn’t see at home. Then I went out and started making sure it happened for other people. It’s a giver’s game, and when you give to other people you actually gain more in the end, so being a part of this is a no-brainer for me.”
